Detection and handshake: As soon as the card enters the 4 cm field, the terminal detects its presence and establishes the communication protocol.
The exchange of cryptograms: The chip on the card calculates a one-time security code (a dynamic cryptogram) and sends it to the terminal with the card ID.
Routing on the international network: The terminal transmits the encrypted information to the merchant's bank (acquiring bank), which redirects it via global networks such as Visa or Mastercard.
Bank authorization: The customer's bank (issuing bank) checks the available balance and the validity of the cryptogram, and then sends the validation back to the terminal.


1. The basic technology: NFC protocol and ISO/IEC standard
Contactless payment is based on NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. It is a short-range version of RFID RFID technology.
According to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), contactless payment is governed by the ISO/IEC 14443 standard. This standard defines communication by radio waves at a specific frequency of 13.56 MHz.
The principle of electromagnetic induction
A plastic bank card does not have a battery.

3. Security: Dynamic Cryptogram and Tokenization
One of the major concerns about contactless is the risk of data interception. However, according to the global EMVCo consortium (the organization owned by Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, JCB and UnionPay that governs payment standards), contactless payment offers a level of security equivalent to inserting the card with a PIN code.
The dynamic cryptogram (dCVV)
Unlike online purchases where the 3-digit code on the back of the card is static, contactless payment generates a single-use dynamic cryptogram. If a hacker managed to intercept radio waves during one transaction, the intercepted data would be completely unusable for a second transaction.
Tokenization for smartphones
When you pay with your smartphone via Apple Pay or Google Wallet, your real card number is never stored in the device or transmitted to the merchant.
Apple or Google's servers replace your card number with a device account number (Token). During payment, the phone's secure hardware component (Secure Element) validates the transaction with this token, making any data theft unusable.


4. Regulatory framework and control ceilings
To limit the risk of fraud in the event of card theft, the international financial authorities have put in place rigorous control mechanisms:
The European Payment Services Directive (PSD2): Issued by the European Central Bank (ECB) and the European Banking Authority (EBA), this regulation requires Strong Customer Authentication (SCA).
The ceilings per transaction: The maximum amount of a contactless transaction without entering the PIN code varies by country (e.g. €50 in the Eurozone).
Accumulated caps and reset: An automatic check requires the PIN code to be entered after a certain number of consecutive transactions (usually 5) or as soon as the cumulative amount without contact reaches a threshold (e.g. €150).
According to statistical reports published by the Federal Reserve in the United States and the Banque de France, the fraud rate on contactless proximity payments remains extremely low, representing a negligible fraction compared to Internet fraud.
